Our Guided Conversation Manual presents 25 discussion topics and is designed for adult learners who have at least an A2 level, meaning they have completed at least 100 hours of coursework with a teacher or specialized tutor, covering the A1 and A2 grammar structures. As we progress through the manual, the level of complexity gradually increases, challenging participants to push their limits and, in a way, assessing their readiness to move on to the next level, B1. For this reason, we believe that the structure provided by the manual is suitable for both A2 and B1 learners.
This guided conversation technique is primarily recommended for study groups, as the power of example and active debate are essential elements of this method. However, these worksheets can also be used by teachers or tutors in one-on-one courses, introducing conversation topics alternately with theoretical subjects.
The 25 guided conversation worksheets follow a coherent narrative, tracing the story of the main character, Maria from Spain, alongside her new friends she made after moving to Brașov. Maria will talk about her family, job, and daily activities, go shopping, attend theater performances, plan her winter vacation in Romania, and spend board game nights with her friends, discussing moods and emotions. She will discover new things about Romania, think about buying a house, explore Romanian superstitions and expressions, and talk about technology, education, movies, books, studying, fashion, and even Romanian language learning techniques. The twenty-five conversation worksheets tell the beginning of Maria’s story in Brașov, representing the ideal experience for any foreigner choosing to settle in Romania.
The text, generally structured on a single page per worksheet, is always preceded by a vocabulary table containing 26 to 30 new words and followed by three exercises designed to organize the information from the text. After these three, the construction exercises follow, in which participants will respond by relating either to their own experiences or viewpoints, to the culture they come from, or by providing a simple practical contribution, even a fictional one, to the discussed topic. They will frequently be asked to write short texts, prepare debates, or give advice to a character or their debate colleagues. Each worksheet concludes with two or three quotes related to the topic, which participants are invited to discuss.
The conversation club is an extraordinary learning experience, based on practice and the power of example, but also an exceptional space for cultural exchange, benefiting everyone involved. Therefore, if someone learning Romanian is also eager for social interaction, the conversation club is the perfect place, where learning becomes an enjoyable and relaxed experience.
As an example, bellow you can download an excerpt from the manual. The different colours indicate that each page belongs to a different worksheet, but together, they illustrate how each worksheet and conversation session is structured.
The introduction presents the guided conversation method, as recommended by the authors, along with a brief summary of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The manual also includes a self-assessment grid and 12 recommendations for organizing a conversation-based Romanian language learning club, addressed to teachers and tutors, along with 15 recommendations for conversation club participants. With this introduction, the manual provides the complete framework for structuring conversation sessions.
