What is CEFR Proficient User C1 Level?

According to the CEFR Global Scale, a C1 Proficient user can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meanings. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Additionally, they can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. A C1 user can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, demonstrating controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.

 

CEFR Self-Assessment Grid for C1 Level

The self-assessment grid is an invaluable tool provided by the CEFR, helping learners, teachers, and users determine their proficiency in various language skills, including listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production, and writing.

Understanding

Listening: The user can understand extended speech, even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not explicitly signaled. They can understand television programs and films without much effort.

Reading: The user can understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style. They can understand specialized articles and longer technical instructions, even when these do not relate to their field.

Speaking

Speaking Interaction: The user can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes, formulating ideas and opinions with precision and skillfully relating their contributions to those of other speakers.

Speaking Production: The user can present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing particular points, and concluding with appropriate summaries.

Writing

The user can express themselves in clear, well-structured text, articulating points of view at length. They can write about complex subjects in letters, essays, or reports, emphasizing the salient issues and selecting an appropriate style for the intended reader.

 

Qualitative Aspects of Spoken Language Use at C1 Level

The CEFR outlines qualitative descriptors to assess spoken performances at each proficiency level. Here are the descriptors for a C1 user:

Range: The user has a good command of a broad range of language, allowing them to select formulations to express themselves clearly in an appropriate style on a wide range of general, academic, professional, or leisure topics without restricting what they want to say.

Accuracy: The user consistently maintains a high degree of grammatical accuracy; errors are rare, difficult to spot, and generally corrected when they do occur.

Fluency: The user can express themselves fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only conceptually difficult subjects can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.

Interaction: The user can select suitable phrases from a readily available range of discourse functions to preface their remarks, keep the floor, and relate their contributions skillfully to those of other speakers.

Coherence: The user can produce clear, smoothly-flowing, well-structured speech, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.
