Vocabulary to Talk About Your Home

There’s something special about being able to describe your home in a new language. When you start to learn Romanian, one of the first steps to fluency is learning how to talk about your living space—where you live, how many rooms you have, and what furniture or appliances are inside.

Talking About Where You Live in Romanian

Early in their studies, our beginner students explore how to express their living situation in Romanian. They practice using the verbs a locui (to live) and a sta (to stay), both commonly used to describe residence.

Examples:

  • Eu locuiesc la bloc, în București. – I live in an apartment block, in Bucharest.

  • Tu stai la casă sau la apartament? – Do you live in a house or in an apartment?

Key vocabulary includes:

  • casă / apartament / vilă / garsonieră – house / apartment / villa / studio

  • bloc / clădire – building

  • la oraș / la țară / la periferie – in the city / countryside / outskirts

  • stradă / cartier / sector / zonă – street / neighborhood / district / area

What Does Your House Have?

Another important area of focus is describing the interior of the home. Learners practice naming rooms and household items, and they begin building sentences with “casa mea are…” (my house has…).

Rooms in the house:

  • camera de zi – living room

  • dormitor – bedroom

  • bucătărie – kitchen

  • baie – bathroom

  • balcon / hol / cămară – balcony / hallway / pantry

Furniture and objects:

  • pat / dulap / masă / scaune – bed / wardrobe / table / chairs

  • aragaz / frigider / chiuvetă – stove / fridge / sink

  • fotoliu / canapea / televizor – armchair / couch / TV

Sample sentence:

  • Casa mea are două dormitoare, o bucătărie și un balcon mare. – My house has two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a large balcony.

This helps students build confidence using definite articles (e.g., camera, balconul) and plural forms (camere, dulapuri).

Grammar Focus: Articles and Descriptive Phrases

Throughout the lessons, learners practice:

  • Using possessive structures: locuința mea, apartamentul tău

  • Forming sentences with “are” (has): El are o garsonieră în oraș.

  • Describing objects using adjectives: un dormitor mare, o bucătărie luminoasă

  • Matching nouns and articles by gender and number: baia / băile, camera / camerele

These patterns are reinforced with visuals and guided exercises that encourage learners to describe both their real and ideal living spaces.
